In 2009, Komnas Perempuan launched the Campaign for Communities of Voters who are Critical, Initiative-Driven, Tolerant, and Measurable (JITU) to ensure and support the realization of quality General Elections. This campaign involved various civil society organizations and individuals from different regions to build a social movement in the form of JITU Voter Communities, as part of political education for the public to elect national leaders and parliamentary representatives committed to the fulfillment of human rights and women’s constitutional rights, with a perspective rooted in nationalism and diversity.
Ahead of the 2024 General Elections and Regional Head Elections, Komnas Perempuan considers it crucial to continue the JITU campaign, as the issues faced in previous elections remain largely unchanged. Komnas Perempuan records show that violence against women has increased annually, with the 2023 Annual Report indicating 339,782 cases of violence against women. Discriminatory policies in the name of religion, morality, or dress codes that result in restrictions, differentiation, harassment, exclusion, and/or neglect of certain groups, particularly women, continue to persist.
Komnas Perempuan’s data also shows that by early 2023, there were 305 discriminatory policies in effect across various regions in Indonesia. Another important aspect is ensuring that elections are conducted free from violence and inclusively, including for persons with disabilities, the elderly, indigenous peoples, and others.
The JITU campaign will raise public awareness about the importance of the Integrity Pact that must be upheld by candidates for national leadership in the 2024 General Elections.
