The National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan) conducted a trial of the “Mapping Instrument on Women’s Leadership and Reproductive Health in the Context of the Climate Crisis in East Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara” on August 15–16, 2025. On the first day, Komnas Perempuan held focused discussions with representatives from regional government organizations and civil society organizations. The discussions continued the following day with representatives of coastal women.

The Chairperson of Komnas Perempuan’s Resource Center, Chatarina Pancer Istiyani, explained that this series of meetings and discussions was intended to gather feedback from various stakeholders on the mapping instrument currently being developed by Komnas Perempuan. “The trial of this instrument is aimed at understanding whether informants can comprehend the questions properly when used. In this way, the intended substance of the mapping can be achieved. Of course, the feedback obtained during these meetings will be used to evaluate and improve the instrument currently being developed,” she said.

Chatarina further stated that the preparation of the Mapping Instrument on Women’s Leadership and Reproductive Health in the Context of the Climate Crisis is a follow-up to knowledge development in a similar context carried out in 2024. After publishing the report titled Lenting dalam Kegentingan, Komnas Perempuan considered it important to explore this issue in a more focused manner. “The aspects of leadership and reproductive health were chosen because they are crucial for women’s resilience and sustainability in climate mitigation,” she added.

Satar, the Head of the Health and Social Subdivision in the P2M Division of Bappeda East Lombok, welcomed Komnas Perempuan’s initiative. He explained that East Lombok Regency faces several challenges in these two aspects. Early marriage, unintended pregnancies, and lack of reproductive health education were identified as prominent challenges. “The average age of first marriage for women in East Lombok Regency in 2024 was 20.7 years. However, this is an improvement from the previous year; in our 2023 data, the average age was 19.7 years,” Satar stated (August 15).

A similar point was raised by Endang, a female fisherwoman in East Lombok. During the discussion on August 16, 2025, she highlighted that early marriage adds to women’s life burdens. “Early marriages mostly occur among girls who drop out of school, up to junior secondary level. If divorced, the mother’s life becomes even harder due to lack of education,” Endang explained.

Recognizing these challenges, this mapping instrument is expected to serve as a tool to identify the root causes and impacts of women’s vulnerabilities in a rapidly changing environment, including coastal areas. Several indicators are incorporated into the instrument, such as participation, resilience, and accountability for rights fulfillment. “These indicators will serve as the foundation of the mapping to ensure that women’s experiences are fully documented,” Chatarina concluded.
